MONITORING PIPELINE DEFLECTION TO IMPROVE LONG TERM OPERABILITY AND RELIABILITY

Power plant seawater inlet of 4 m diameter GRP (fiberglass) pipes exhibited excessive deflection, exceeding the 2% allowable deflection upon installation and backfilling. 26 locations exceeded 2% and another 6 were between 1% and 2%. The pipe supplier confirmed that pipelines would be safe during operation; nevertheless, main contractor was concerned and requested monitoring of deflection during power plant operation at 32 locations for 3 years after startup.

Application:

Power plant seawater inlet of 4 m diameter GRP (fiberglass) pipes exhibited excessive deflection, exceeding the 2%

Challenge:

  

Pipelines are up to 9 m underground. Deflection measurments had to be undertaken  during operation while muddy sea water at at over 40°C is flowing at 1.8 m/s. Distance from sensor to monitoring system is about 200 meters. Measurement components in pipes are inaccessible after startup.

The system had to be accurate to 0.1%, capable of operating in the adverse environment and robust, such that accurate measurments can be maintained in the event of failure of up to 50% of hardware. Contractor contacted YLE GmbH that has extensive knowledge in GRP pipelines testing and deflection measurements.

Solution:  

  

YLE GmbH adopted a solution based on MonoDAQ hardware consisting of MonoDAQ-E-STG module packed in a water tight casing with cable glands for on-site installation. MonoDAQ devices are daisy-chained between them, so power, synchronisation and data are distributed over a single CAT6 cable. Sensor data are aquired by MonoDAQ-E-STG module and then transfered to a PC, where DEWESoft software is recording the data.
