Challenge:

 

Our system integrator's (SCI-Meas) customer from Malaysia experienced bad quality production, very frequent unplanned downtimes, and late deliveries. The customer was assuming that the problems he is facing are a consequence of vibrations (called Chatter) but he wasn't able to assess which CNC part is critical. He was well aware that vibrations harm the quality of work, dramatically reduces the life of the tool, and can even shorten the life of the CNC machine.

Solution:  

 

  • Studied the machine composition and its elements in detail
  • Conducted a thorough interview with customer maintenance engineers in order to understand the issues they where facing so far in details


Different things can cause chatter problems. The main possible roots for the issues are:

  • Loose bearings
  • Quntities you are routing,
  • Feeds and speeds..

 

Since the customer is a really experienced contract manufacturer company we immediately eliminated possible issues due to bad expertise and focused on bearings issue first. Therefore we installed the MonoDAQ accelerometers and temperature sensors and set vibration and temperature tresholds as well as alarm values together with company personnel.

After months of conductiong measurements we figured out that the machine failures occured in the past where derived as a consequence of lower quality spindler bearings which the company was installing during a regular maintanance cycle. Their deterioration over time was resulting in vibrations of the whole CNC machine, bad qulity products and also shut downs.
